This series of classes are designed to give parents who have children newly diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder an overview of services available in our community. Parents will learn to evaluate services and choose ones which are best for their child and family
Topics will include: Definition and history of ASD; medical and school criteria; dual diagnosis; school programs; insurance issues; safety; how to evaluate treatment options; social supports, respite; speech, occupational and physical therapy; picture schedules, PECS, social stories; sign language and other augmented communication; medical treatments; behavioral interventions, dietary interventions; ABA, RDI, Floor-time; social skills; local, state and national resources and advocacy.

The Down Syndrome Network Group of Southeast Minnesota is having their next meeting on May 30, 2008 from 6pm-8pm at Calvary Evangelical Free Church, 5500 25th Avenue NW, Rochester MN. Guest speaker will be Kathleen Forney, the director of the Down Syndrome Association of Minnesota. Her topics will include the Down Syndrome Association’s medical and educational initiatives. This group is sponsored by Arc Southeastern MN and the Down Syndrome Association of MN. A light meal will be provided.

SAM will be hosting a Regional Conference May 31 in Rochester. It will be a day of fun, learning, and socializing with workshop topics that include Leadership, Self-Advocacy, Card Making, Healthy Relationships, Karaoke, Self Advocacy Theatre, and Quality Assurance. This presentation will assist persons with disabilities and/or mental illness and their family in identifying and resolving their unique life and estate planning problems they must face in order to guarantee a quality lifestyle when the family is no longer available. It will take participants from the first to the last planning step, while keeping the emphasis on giving down to earth assistance applicable for today.
Topics will include: Protecting Governmental Benefits, Wills and Supplemental Needs Trust, Avoiding Family Conflict, the PLAN Program and Reducing Professional Costs.
(Each family attending is entitled to receive a two-hour, no-charge, consultation to discuss how a comprehensive Life Plan would work in their situation.)
Sponsored by Arc Southeastern Minnesota/PLAN of Southeastern Minnesota.

| Arc Southeastern Minnesota Annual Picnic |

This year the Arc Southeastern Minnesota Family and Friends Annual Potluck Picnic will be held at Quarry Hill. We will be remembering with dignity people with developmental disabilities who are buried at the Rochester State Hospital Cemetery. After supper people who are interested will walk the short distance to pay our respects at the cemetery. Please watch your mail for the picnic flyer we’ll send out closer to the event.
